📐 Setup

Set up a small goal at one end of the area and a starting cone 12 to 15 yards away. The attacker starts with the ball at the cone and the defender begins a couple of yards to the side and behind.

📋 How to Run It

  1. 1The attacker drives toward goal trying to beat the defender and score.
  2. 2The defender closes down and tries to delay long enough to win or poke the ball away.
  3. 3If the attacker gets a shot, the rep ends after the finish or rebound.
  4. 4If the defender wins the ball first, that player immediately attacks the same goal and tries to finish within three touches.
  5. 5Swap roles each rep and keep a running score for both attacking and defending success.

💡 Coaching Tips

  • The first touch toward goal must be purposeful; weak touches invite the tackle.
  • Defenders should look to stay goal side before trying to poke the ball free.
  • The counterattack after the steal should be immediate, not casual.
  • Use short rest periods so the drill keeps an intense, competitive feel.

🔄 Variations

  • Easier: start the defender farther back or give the attacker a side advantage.
  • Harder: require the attacker to finish on the weaker foot.
  • Team version: the next pair rebounds loose balls to start their duel instantly.
